Prevention is better than cure.
Always take plenty of spare oxygen with you.
Always keep plenty of water and fruit juice with you.
Be aware that some sites have poor mobile phone reception.
Know what the signs of decompression sickness are.
Basic First Aid for Decompression Sickness:
Lie the person down.
Administer oxygen, they may get worse before they get better.
Give fluids, water with fruit juice, unless they have lost the ability to urinate.
Get them to a decompression chamber a.s.a.p.
In France the police, ( the gendarmerie ), are responsible for cave rescue and are the first contact point.
The number to dial is 112 which is the European emergency number, and have operators who speak
English, ( you also use this number for any emergency, police, fire and medical.) Tell them you are involved in a
cave diving accident, ‘ accident de speleologie’ , and have ready the name of the site, accurate directions,
GPS co-ordinates, and what the problem is.
They will contact all the rescue services, and if needed a helicopter to take the diver to a decompression
chamber.
